Drawing PapersEvery artist has their own technique, style and preferred instruments. Each particular brand of paper has its own nuances that work differently with different techniques. It is up to the individual artist to choose the right substrate for their work. Even papers that are described in a similar manner have slightly different characteristics, so it is important to experiment and discover what is best for your work. While dozens of our papers are suitable for drawing of all kinds, we've taken the time to list the top 20 or so below. All are available in sheets, some in blocks, pads and rolls as well. Both handmade and mouldmade papers are still being made today in the city of Fabriano following traditions that have made this the center of Italian paper making since the thirteenth century. More than 40 mills flourished along the River Giano, which by the l5th century, exported their papers throughout Europe and North Africa and were praised by Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael. The Fabriano papermakers can be given credit for several innovations in papermaking such as the use of gelatine instead of starch as a sizing and the invention of the hydraulic hammer for the preparation of the pulp. But it is the creation of the watermark, which is perhaps Fabriano's most important contribution, since its use allowed for the identification of a sheet of paper and its maker. Indeed, Fabriano is still widely known for the intricate watermarks that adorn their sheets including the photo-watermarked varieties that were used for Italian currency. Today, Cartiere Miliani Fabriano is a massive operation, still comprised of numerous mills, each with their own special grades of paper. This vibrantly colored, double-sided card stock is a great choice for paper art projects. Textured on one side, smooth on the other, this acid-free, 220 gsm paper is ideal for all drawing techniques and is wonderful for invitations and announcements. Machinemade of 100% sulphite, neutral pH (except Blue, Black and Fuschia), no deckles. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE ONLINE (this links to our sister site LetterPressPaper.com)
Mouldmade watermarked paper made from 100% cotton. Particularly recommended and designed for fine art techniques like watercolor, gouache, soft pastels, oil pastels and charcoal. Artistico is also suitable also for printmaking techniques such as lithography and silkscreen. Available in three distinct surfaces for varying painting approaches. Artistico is internally and externally sized, and extremely lightfast. Its neutral pH guarantees permanence and resistance to aging. The two long sides have deckle edges and the trademark "C.M. FABRIANO - 100% COTTON" runs parallel to them. Artistico takes color beautifully like no other sheet before and withstands lifting and scraping.
Now available is a new matching envelope range for Fabriano Artistico Extra White in all weights (140 lbs and 300 lbs) and surfaces (Cold Press, Hot Press, Soft Press and Rough). Please click here for more details about our new Textured Envelopes
A nice bright versatile white, the Artistico Extra White is available in two weights (140- and 300-lb) and four surfaces (hot, cold, soft, and rough). The new hot and soft presses mimic their previous Uno counterparts, but the new Artistico Extra White cold and rough presses offer more texture. The new cold press is comparable to the old Uno rough press, while an entirely new and enhanced rough surface has been created to finish off the Artistico Extra White line.

Legion Eco-Rag is a 100% cotton heavyweight (600gsm) paper with a pronounced texture. Created in 2009 with both the environment and the economy in mind, its price compares to that of paper half its weight. The paper was developed at a fourth generation family run paper mill in the US using high quality (tree-free) cotton linters made using 100% post industrial waste. (Using post industrial fiber allows the mill to keep millions of pounds of waste from entering landfills each year). They have two hydro-electric turbines that run most of the year producing electricity needed in papermaking. They also produce compost from all of their waste byproduct.
Available in two sheet sizes; buffered with calcium carbonate and lightly sized.
Envelopes: Legion Textured Envelopes (in white) are a good match and are stocked in 4bar, A2, A6, A7, 6.5" squares, all with a "scoop" flap.

The special texture of Murillo's surface and heavy 360 gsm weight are the principal features of this exquisite range of 19 colors. Made from 15% cotton/85% sulphite, this neutral pH paper is lightly sized and suitable for light water techniques. It has a beautiful wove surface that makes it particularly suited for deluxe editions and other book arts. Its body and weight makes it ideal for embossing techniques, and it can also be used for printmaking and drawing. Named after Bartolomsteban Murillo, these papers reflect his subtlety of color and texture.
Cartiere Magnani has been making fine art paper since 1404. In the 600+
years since, they have mastered the delicate balance between old world
knowledge & craftsmanship and state of the art papermaking
techniques. Their
papers perfectly reflect this balance. For drawing, we recommend
Annigoni, Pescia, Velata and Vergata papers. Click on the link below
for more information on these papers, including sizes, weights and
colors.
This is one of the most versatile sheets of the thousands we have in our collection. Pescia is mouldmade of 100% cotton. Its soft, smooth surface makes it suitable for most all drawing and printmaking techniques including etching, pencil, charcoal, pastel, engraving ink, acrylic and lithography. Chlorine-free, neutral pH. Pescia blocks are available in white/cold pressed only. Full sheets are available in several colors in the smooth finish.

Saunders Waterford is the highest quality watercolour paper offered to artists by St Cuthberts Mill. Mouldmade using 100% cotton and endorsed by the Royal Watercolour Society of England, this is a paper of pure luxury. Available in three surface finishes. HP (Hot Pressed) is the smoothest, which is great for high detail paintings. CP (Cold Pressed) is a good intermediate surface which is great for most types of paintings. Rough is exactly what its name suggests, a fantastic surface for landscapes and seascapes where the surface can really work with the painting. Each of the three surfaces is resilient to buckling and offers exceptional color stability.A new addition to the Saunders family is the High White colour which complements the original range of 'White' papers with a new whiter shade that's much brighter. A whiter sheet will make finished paintings more contemporary looking, as artists have commented that they felt the original white colour created a more antique look to their finished compositions. The paper you choose should always reflect the image you are trying to create. Rough - If you want to do a landscape or seascape, a rough paper with a surface full of natural peaks and valleys will complement the image beautifully, giving it depth and feeling. Cold Press - A surface in between 'Rough' and 'HP' is the most versatile and can be used for many different types of painting. Hot Press - The smooth surface makes it perfectly suited for delicate brushwork and illustration. The surface sizing eliminates pen marks from feathering making it also suited for calligraphy.
